China’s biggest and craziest shopping festival

China’s biggest shopping festival is here, and it’s no coincidence that it’s also the biggest shopping event in the world. To give you an idea of just how big the Singles Day event, also known as Double 11, is — in 2020 alone, the shopping festival’s total sales reached 498 billion yuan ($78 billion). By comparison, Black Friday weekend sales in the United States generated only about $22 billion that year.

No doubt China’s huge population is a credit to these huge numbers, but there is no denying that the new era of interactive sales technologies such as live streaming commerce and the rapid expansion of China’s logistics network (between Nov 11 and 16, nearly 3 billion packages were delivered in China 2020) have amplified the scale of the shopping extravaganza.

Although Singles Day began as a celebration of bachelors, today, it’s much more than that.

The concept of celebrating the “single life” became popular on Chinese university campuses in the 1990s. Eventually, the idea spread across the country via the Internet and other media. November 11 is celebrated as Singles Day because of its digital significance. The date consists of four “ones,” where “1″ stands for “single.” So 11/11, 11/11, represents four singles.

But Singles Day in China had nothing to do with shopping until Alibaba decided in 2009 to popularize the day with a big shopping event, like Black Friday in the United States. In just a few years, Singles Day has gone from being the biggest shopping festival in China to the biggest shopping extravaganza in the world, dwarfing major international shopping events such as Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

Moreover, what began as a 24-hour shopping window on November 11th has now expanded into a two – or three-week sales campaign. Not only Alibaba, but also major Chinese retailers such as JD.com, Pinduoduo and Suning are participating in the big sales festival.
